Dr. Thierry Verstraeten is an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Drexel University College of Medicine and a Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He is a member of the Retina Service at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Dr. Verstraeten is originally from Belgium where he completed his medical degree at the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium. He accepted a research fellowship position at the Schepens Eye Research Institute in 1985 where he worked with Ors. Newfeld, Buzney, and Weiter on RPE cell cultures and pharmacologic modulation of their growth. In 1986 he received a travel fellowship from the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO). He then completed his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh Eye and Ear Hospital. He has done a fellowship in Vitreoretinal Disease and Surgery at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan. His research interest involves pharmacologic separation of the vitreoretinal junction and macular surgery. He has served for 3 years as a grant reviewer for Research to Prevent Blindness. In 2009 he received the American Society of Retinal Specialist Honor Award. He was elected President of the Pittsburgh Ophthalmology Society from 2015 to 2017. He has published numerous articles on retinal disease in peer reviewed journals, published book chapters, and participated in national meetings as a lecturer, moderator, and operated in “live surgery” meetings.
Dr. Verstraeten resides in Fox Chapel with his wife and four children.
